swim deep Giveaway: Swim Deep and The 1975 at MagnetSwim Deep are four young lads from Birmingham who love skateboards and Nirvana and making what they call “sun kissed noise”. It just takes one listen to their first single King City to realize that this self description is not an exaggeration.

I was particularly taken by the video which shows the boys riding through Birmingham on skateboards. Their outfits remind me a lot of my early youth back in the mid 90s (I guess these kids were born around then).

Following their first single, the Birmingham quartet have quietly gone about honing their live sound, acquired a new bass player and signed on the dotted line with Chess Club Records on which they have since released the singles Honey, The Sea and She Changes The Weather. Their debut album Where The Heaven Are We is to be released on June 29th.

Hard to pin down, be it beach-grunge, surf-rock or any other sub genre, Swim Deep resonate with a feel good vibe. According to the British media, Swim Deep are the next big thing. We here in Germany are a little more careful with such statements because there’s at least ten next big things out there. I think you should all decide for yourself and go see them tonight. In the UK, Swim Deep have played a rather successful headline tour and opened for Two Door Cinema Club no less.

Another band that has also toured with TDCC, in Europe though, will also be on the bill; the 1975. Definitely one of my favourite bands right now and certainly one of the ten next big things. They recently opened the sold out TDCC show in Berlin where they gained a bunch of new fans. It was also the second time that I saw them and I was amazed by how well they did on that huge stage at Astra (which isn’t easy for a support act).

The 1975 are from Manchester doing expansive pop noir that echoes their home city’s sonic history. It’s fair to suggest The 1975 grew up understanding their city’s musical heritage, their sound does reflect the dark art-rock of New Order and Joy Division. They have just released Music For Cars, the final instalment from their acclaimed EP trilogy, the other two being Facedown and Sex. The 1975’s forthcoming debut album will be co-produced by the band and the award-winning Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals).

The lovely people at FKP Scorpio have given us 1×2 tickets to giveaway for the show. To win, just email winwinwin@www.blitzgigs.de with your full name and tell us (this is a fun one!)…

Who do you think will be “the next big thing”?

Entries close Monday, May 6th at 12 noon.
