Radiohead at Kindl Bühne

One of the greatest bands in the world and one that’s without a doubt earned its place in music history, fucking Radiohead, there’s seriously nothing else we really need to say about them. This is the ticket of the year and we can even say that completely objectively since tickets are on sale and will sell out a full seven months before the show date. It’s not a rubbish venue either, it’s Kindl Bühne, when they could have easily put themselves on at O2 World and done a boring stadium show they’ve instead gone somewhere nice and a bit green and with a bit of character and remember that it’ll be a Summer evening, they’re obviously keeping the quality of the evening in mind. It’s not just that they’re an amazing band, but they’re obviously nice blokes too.

Holly Mae And The Painted Room at Madame Claude

Holly Mae And The Painted Room’s recent albums I Am Dark Sided (20119 and Turn Of Phrase (2010) can more than hold their own in comparison to any of your other folk-influenced favourites of the past few years, excellent stuff. Heart wrenching lyrics backed by beautiful passages of hushed, brushed drums, barely plucked banjos and mandolins, violin, piano and trumpets all playing their part for the star of the record, Holly Mae’s voice, stunning stuff.

Tonight playing alongside The Great Park this should be a cosy spring evening down in the Madame Claude basement, a not a bad way to start your weekend.

Holly Mae & the Painted Room is a Berlin-based, California-bred acoustic Art Folk band and is comprised of Holly Mae Haddock, Kathy Kwon, Sara Kwon, and Molly McDonnell. The group’s lyrically-oriented music and pre-polished sound plumb the personal and ring in harmonic resonance with the universal. Holly Mae draws inspiration from myths and
tragedies, children’s stories, outsider art, and science. Primary influences include Joni Mitchell, Neko Case, Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens, Bob Dylan, Daniel Johnston, and Bonnie Prince Billy.

Holly Mae was raised on an organic farm on the California central coast. Her childhood was steeped in folk music and she started writing songs as a teen. She began playing out in the 1990s in the acoustic side of the riot grrrl scene, where she opened for Sleater-Kinney at the Goleta Women’s Festival, under the name La Sullen Teen in 1996.
After college, Holly Mae assembled an acoustic folk band, The Interludes, in 2005, and eventually formed Holly Mae and the Painted Room in 2007 in Detroit, Michigan. She performed at the Ypsilanti Songwriting Festival in 2008 and 2009, where she was honored as a Resident Local Songwriter two years in a row. Moving to Berlin in January 2010m Holly formed the current incarnation of Holly Mae and the Painted Room.

Steve Smyth at Magnet Club

As the moon rose to it’s highest point in the sky, Steve Smyth drove one night down a desert highway. Stopping the engine and turning out the lights, he set foot walking in amongst the dunes. Soon after, the Devil himself rose from the ground and smiled at Steve and offered him his hand.

“I can infuse you with old time rock and the true spirit of blues” said the Devil, “but I’ll need something in return”.

After that being said and a shaken hand, then the deal was done. Steve Smyth now walks the earth knowing that the Devil owns his soul, but there’s few that can compare when it comes to his belting out a song.

We Have Band at Gretchen

These guys are a complete guilty pleasure, they never ever even from the beginning sounded like a band that anyone should still be listening to up to 2012. Even though that first cut of Hear It In The Cans on Kitsune 6 in 2008 was pretty awesome. And the first album was a solid listen too, even though they plenty of people wouldn’t agree with that. In anycase here they are, We Have Band (previously, previouslyer), with their second album out just late January and touring Europe. Headlining a Saturday night at the so-hot-right-now Gretchen and being a bit more grown up and just being the Knight Rider car of the indie-electro set. Maybe the best idea is to catch them now before they get even bigger. ?

Pulled Apart By Horses at Magnet Club

With a brand new album, Tough Love, out end of January, it’s the perfect time for Leeds act Pulled Apart By Horses to touch down here in Berlin. Although, when you’re the best named band in the world, it’s always time for a night at Magnet. Seriously, that is one fucking cool name.

They’ve been kicking around since 2007 and in that time they’ve toured with Muse and Biffy Clyro as well as had stuff out on Transgressive, which is impressive just by itself. They’ve had tracks in the UK indie top 20 and if rock’n'roll is going to save your soul, these guys are Jesus with laser beams of redemption shooting from his eyes. Which doesn’t sound immediately appealing, except that it is since they’re responsible for one of the greatest party tracks of all time…

Casiokids at Postbahnhof

The English speaking world has always been a bit divided, there’s the first camp that says that the Scottish have the loveliest accents when speaking English, which is fair enough since Ewan McGregor could mumble out a shopping list or the ingredients list from a tube of toothpaste and still sound like a highland lord so it’s self evidencial that they’ve got a point. The other camp takes the route that it’s the Norwegians with the nicest speaking tones. When I say camp, I might be overstating the level of support a little, since it’s probably only me holding that opinion, never having heard anyone else ever say that the Norwegians sound amazing when speaking English, but being an outsider isn’t so bad and definitely something you can get used to. They do sound awesome though.

All that nonsense aside, if someone had ever managed to channel the Norwegian way of speaking through a set of synths and made it danceable, it would be the lovely people of Casiokids (previously). No stranger to you if you’re into upper-eschalon indie electro pop ala Architecture in Helsinki, the new album from them Aabenbaringen over Aaskammen was released internationally January 16th this year on Moshi Moshi. Starting the European tour in Jan in England, Casiokids will be playing two shows in Germany, Hamburg and here in Berlin at the wonderfully shiny-when-it-feels-like-it Postbahnhof. Tickets are 15€ and they’re supported by Zebra and Snake…

AA Bondy at Maschinenhaus

I saw AA Bondy open up for Bill Callahan a couple of years ago in Lido on a steaming hot night and only caught the last three songs but it was enough, I was hooked. Bondy’s particular type of americana/folk rock seems to evolve with each new record and Believers, his third album in four years, has elevated him above this tag to something else; what that something else is I couldn’t say, nor could Bondy for that matter:

I just don’t look at music that way. It all runs together, as far as I’m concerned.

Believers is a stark yet warm listening experience; it’s hopeful and rich, the floaty feel of the guitars give it space to breathe and somehow simultaneously invoke big, black, starry night skies and warm, sunny days, free as a bird by the sea. With no more than a basic guitar, bass and drums set up, this album is one of 2011′s treasures and, judging from recent live footage, he’s taking the live reproduction of these songs very seriously indeed, so we’re in for a treat tonight I expect.

This show has been moved from Comet Club to the criminally underused Maschinenhaus in the Kulturbrauerei, one of my favourite venues in town and perfect for hearing one of my favourite records of recent times get an airing.
