Radiohead at Kindl Bühne

One of the greatest bands in the world and one that’s without a doubt earned its place in music history, fucking Radiohead, there’s seriously nothing else we really need to say about them. This is the ticket of the year and we can even say that completely objectively since tickets are on sale and will sell out a full seven months before the show date. It’s not a rubbish venue either, it’s Kindl Bühne, when they could have easily put themselves on at O2 World and done a boring stadium show they’ve instead gone somewhere nice and a bit green and with a bit of character and remember that it’ll be a Summer evening, they’re obviously keeping the quality of the evening in mind. It’s not just that they’re an amazing band, but they’re obviously nice blokes too.

It’s only fair that after the original break up of Death From Above 1979 that some other band would kind of take up that energy and make something of it. Make something powerful. Sure, Death From Above are back, but they’re only going to be playing massive rooms now and that’s just not what the sound is all about, it’s a sound for sweaty loud clubs that are a bit secret full of sweaty loud kids that like being secretive. Not stadiums full of bored festival punters. Sorry, true. This is why DZ Deathrays are here at the right time, and with a show here in Berlin, the right place.

Tres Awesome, no? Fucking explodey I’d say. Seriously.

Crocodiles at Bi Nuu

The San Diego kids of Crocodiles are just on the cusp of releasing their brand new and extremely hotly anticipated new album Endless Flowers. Being no strangers to Berlin after the Ficken 2000 residency story, one that will hallow down the ages as being a Berlin music classic, where the album was recorded in the club over the space of a month, it’s only fair that they do a show here and where better than the so-hot-right-now climes of Bi Nuu.

Supporting on the night will be Italian something-punks Smart Cops who’ve only been around for a little while in this current incarnation, but are completely worth your while if you’re into classic punk at all.

Codeine at Festsaal Kreuzberg

Codeine were a pioneer indie band, formed 1989 in NYC, who “invented” slowcore and sadcore as genres, alongside the likes of Idaho and Red House Painters. They only released two albums, Frigid Stars (1990) and The White Birch (1994), before breaking up in 1994. Despite their short career and limited output, their influence on the slowcore, sadcore, indie and postrock genre shouldn’t be underestimated.

They are playing a one-off reunion tour in celebration of an extensive reissue of their records. Pretty obvious but I’ll say it anyway: most probably the only chance you’ll get to see ever see them live.

“While more heads were banged to Frigid Stars , more candles were lit in lonely rooms to The White Birch , and it is the record from the Sub Pop catalog that stands apart from the garden-variety grunge era reflex of snarky self-denigration as a truly sobering and scary monument to depressive catatonia in rock form. After counting out the syllables Codeine’s vocalist finds while singing the phrase “and it takes a long time but then I understand,” you realize that the slow tempo is not just an arresting affectation but a means of testing the limits of minimalism, figuring out on the fly just how less becomes more. In Codeine’s case, less language and less clutter allows the band to focus the maximum emotional impact in a few gestures. Disregard the weepy slowcore baggage that turned this breakthrough into a style and listen to a band asking itself tough questions: “How do you learn to try?/ Why can’t I?”. Don’t hold it against them that they broke up after making this recording. Having stared into the void this steadily is achievement enough.”

Willis Earl Beal at Monarch

Astonishingly interesting and talented, Willis Earl Beal is one of those rare multi-talents who’s actually good at all the things he does, rather than being just adequate all round. A poet, musician and artist, the 27 year old Chicago kid has proved himself a worthwhile addition to a great many cultural scenes and movements, but none so much as within the lo-fi soul arena, where he has been christened the ‘black Tom Waits’. This is even through his aim to never be rooted too solidly within one musical domain, irrespectively swaying within R’n’B & Rap, Noise & Indie, Folk & Punk.

The new LP from Willis Earl Beal made it out April 3rd with the title Acousmatic Sorcery, his debut solo album and one that’s already been making a lot of waves in indie music circles. He plays a special concert here in Berlin at the Monarch in Kreuzberg. Tickets are on sale here.

The Cold Hand at Rummels Perle

With a lonely gypsy heart and a penchant for late-night music, Berlin band The Cold Hand are releasing their debut album, Paperships, due out end of May.

Coming from the same corner as Leonard Cohen but with a 90′s 4AD thing about them as well, they bill themselves as playing Funeral Folk, an easy label to land on given that the material is structurally akin to folk in a completely slow motion kind of way and at the same time is utterly sombre. Utterly. But not miserable somehow, you somehow won’t be crying into your glass of red wine at the end of the show, but it might be the start of your new romance with nihilism.

Blitzgigs Presents: The Spits at Festsaal

Punk for the people is their mantra and punk is what the people shall have. Seattle based garage punk legends The Spits have tirelessly battled the evil forces of ‘the man’ and have put out a steady stream of progressively more amazing albums since their first releases around 2000. It’s not a fight that’s quickly over or easily won, but luckily the Spits are in it for the long run, the newest album from them made it out of the studio just last year. Like the rest of them it’s self titled, but you can count (can you count?) it as number 5 released October last year.

Playing a super rare gig here in Berlin, the Spits jump on the stage at the Festsaal with a massive lineup presented by Blitzgigs.de.

Hunx & His Punx out of San Francisco play as an all girl lineup except they’ve got a man as front girl, which sounds more confusing than it actually is and the music is completely ace and you should get into it, if you haven’t already. Berlin act The Black Jaspers open up the night as a gag act that just happened to be awesome formed between members of The Moorat Fingers and King Khan, legendary front man of King Khan and the Shrines.

Seriously, one of the greatest rock bands in the world right now. And if I’m alone in that opinion, which I’m sure I’m not, but for the sake of argument lets say I am, I’m absolutely going to build a rocket ship in my backyard and blast off and find some other rock to habitate on. I’ve found myself able to exist satisfactorily in the same world as people who drive large cars short distances and animals that kill for sport, but I couldn’t be happy living even in the same planetary orbit as a bunch of crumbs that didn’t think Obits (previously) were pretty amazing.

Don’t be the cause of my leaving this planet. I actually quite like a few things here and Neptune is a bit cold this time of year, so I’ve heard.
