kloot1 e1288368985527 I Am Kloot at PostbahnhofFritzclub is a serious place. I have a feeling that I have to look neat and responsible and grown up when I go there. And everything is really professional: the sound is great, the lighting on stage is great, and if it’s announced that the concert will start at eight, it will start at eight. Which is nice for a change.

And so Agnes Obel, the support act for Wednesday night’s show, went on obel 300x199 I Am Kloot at Postbahnhofstage at eight. And what a beautiful warm up. Dreamy piano arpeggios, the warm sound of a cello and Obel’s sweet voice on top singing about rivers and landscapes. Especially the last song, where they broke a little bit with the innocent sweetness, was enchanting.

The main name, the British folk pop band I Am Kloot, went on stage accompanied by nothing less than a fanfare, which from judging the reaction of the crowd was not at all too much. They opened the show with Northern Skies, the first track on their new album Sky At Night, and continued with a few more from the same album before starting to blend their older material into the set. It was quite obvious that the majority of the crowd were big fans, because whenever they played an old song, lead singer John Bramwell only needed to play a few notes on his guitar, before the audience recognized it and gave a howl in return.

The most poetic moment of the night was as everybody except Bramwell left the stage, leaving him to stand alone and ask ”will you sit with me, at the sea”. With his rusty voice and his can of Guinness, you have this feeling that there is so much life behind his lyrics. And I can too easily imagine these guys meet up at the local pub and talk about big things with few words. I would call it integrity. But it does help that so many of the songs are about drinking.

kloot2 300x199 I Am Kloot at PostbahnhofWhen the rest of the group came back on stage, they played one of the highlights from Sky At Night, the no less poetic and jazzy Fingerprints. And the crowd went on cheering, yelling witty comments and suggesting songs, with absolute no effect on the band. They did end the set with a crowd pleaser though, the more rocky One Man Brawl from the album I Am Kloot Play Moolah Rouge, but they went back to the apparently less known new album for the encore. Which was great, because the new album is great.

And so was Wednesday night at Fritzclub.
