After five years of building a supremely committed fan base, Essex based one-time post-hardcore outfit We Are The Ocean return with their new record Ark (out May 11th). Having cut their teeth in the baptism of fire that is the US Vans Warped Tour, before graduating to the festival circuit and supporting Muse on their European stadium tour, Ark sees the band take a new direction one again.
Initially a post-hardcore act, WATO turned towards alternative rock after the departure of their second vocalist and shouter Dan Brown. While their 2013 album, Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow, was pretty much a pop rock album in the style of associated UK acts such as Twin Atlantic or You Me At Six, Ark exhibits a Muse-esque sound with high pitched vocals and orchestration.
Having followed the band for a couple of years now, it’s great to see how far they have come. With a total of four studio album under their belt, each having their own unique sound, WATO have found their niche among a vast array of UK rock bands. What truly sets them apart though is Liam Cromby’s strong tenor.
WATO evidently aim for the big stages with their new found anthemic sound. Lucky for us, it is still possible to see them play the small and intimate venues this side of the channel. Tonight, they will play a fine collection of old and new songs.
