Shearwater + Jesca Hoop – Ausverkauft / Sold out Doors: 19:00 / Show: 20:00 Karten: 17,20 eur inkl. VVK-Gebuehr Manchmal wird eine Band von ihrer eigenen Musik ueberrascht. So erging es beispielsweise Jonathan Meiburg, als er “Fellow Travelers” aufnehmen wollte. Urspruenglich waren die Stuecke, war das Konzept fuer eine kleine Produktion geplant, eine EP vielleicht, daheim aufgenommen, eine nette Veroffentlichung irgendwo auf halbem Weg zwischen dem letzten Shearwater-Album “Animal Joy” und einer kommenden Platte. Doch plotzlich entwickelten die Songs ein Eigenleben. Wohlgemerkt Songs, die gar nicht aus der Feder der Band stammten. Denn “Fellow Travelers” ist eine Platte voller Cover-Versionen, bearbeitete Stuecke von Bands, mit denen die Indie-Rocker aus Texas einmal zusammen auf Tour waren. Gemeinsam Reisende eben, wie es der Titel zum Ausdruck bringt. Erinnerungen an Momente in Backstage-Bereichen, im Tourbus, auf der Buehne. So baten Shearwater ihre ehemaligen fellow travelers, mit ihnen zusammen Songs von jeweils anderen Kuenstlern neu einzuspielen, ihnen neues Gewicht zu geben, sie mit der Erinnerung zu fuellen, und fast alle kamen dem Wunsch nach. Entstanden ist ein aussergewohnliches Album, das von Freundschaft, Vertrauen und Glauben erzaehlt. Denn wie sagt Meiburg: “Auf Tour zu gehen ist ein Ausdruck des Glaubens, an dich selbst, an deine Freunde, daran, dass es auf dieser Welt einen Platz fuer dich gibt.” Entstanden sind Versionen, die sich weit von den Originalen abheben und doch ihren Geist atmen. Man hore sich nur einmal das hymnische “I Luv the Valley, OH!” von Xiu Xiu an, dessen tolles Science-Fiction-Video bereits im Internet rotiert. Wie Shearwater dieses Konzept auf der Buehne umsetzen, wenn sie im kommenden April zu uns auf Tour kommen, wird spannend werden. Aber wenn es jemand kann, dann Shearwater.

Shearwaters are medium-sized long-winged seabirds. So, you might not know this about Shearwater but they are birdwatchers. Yes, real birds. Main man Jonathan Meiburg is a part-time ornithologist, for real. He’s spent periods living on the remotest islands of this planet studying birds and when he’s not studying birds he’s just hanging out in extremely remote places writing great songs and music it seems.

As a Shearwater fan this information shed a lot of light on where Shearwater’s recent trilogy of records have come from. Obviously the cover of Rooks should have rang bells but it was winter and I sleep in the winter. Informed by places, environments and peoples on the brink Meiburg has attempted daringly to channel this into his music and with spectacular results. “Palo Santo”, “Rooks” and “The Golden Archipelago” are essential listening for any modern rock music lover. From their beginnings as an alt-country side project of Austin’s Okkervil River started by Meiburg and Will Sheff, Shearwater has since grown it’s own wings so to speak.

Anyway, to celebrate the release of their latest record Fellow Travelers, Shearwater will be at Privatclub tonight. It was meant to be a small thing, maybe a home-recorded EP, to release between Animal Joy and the next full-length (for which they’re in the studio right now). But it took on a life of its own, re-imagining and renovating songs by the bands they’ve toured with.

Support comes from their friend Jesca Hoop along for the tour. Jesca joined them in Europe on some dates in 2012 and appears on Fellow Travelers, and in addition to opening the shows, she’ll be playing in the band. The last time she was in a band she was singing backup for Peter Gabriel on his New Blood tour, so they’ve got some big shoes to fill.
