It’s funny how some bands are super big in the UK while they are still a bit of an insider’s tip here in Germany. Mancunians The 1975 are such a case. Their self-titled debut topped the UK album charts and their UK headline tour sold out quickly. You may wonder what’s so special about these guys and if they aren’t just another overhyped newcomer band full of teenage hearthrobs. That is all quite wrong actually. The 1975 started playing together ten years ago when they were in their early teens and went to school in the suburbs of Manchester. After they’d changed their name about half a dozen times they signed to British indie label Dirty Hit. The label kept the band in the shadows for a few years until they were ready to release four EPs in a row in 2012 and an album in September this year. Their “hits” The City, Chocolate, and Sex are their most radio-friendly outputs while the remainder of the album and particularly the EPs are astonishingly clever pop music that draws from all kinds of genres and influences (there’s a full review here).
And yet few people have noticed them in Germany thus far. They played the Introducing showcase earlier this year as well as a support set for Two Door Cinema Club. I think it’s about time they played their first headline gig in Berlin and I advise you all to go because when they come back next year they’re likely to play much bigger venues than Bi Nuu.
